XL Specialized Trailers will showcase the new XL 140 Hydraulic Detachable Extendable (HDE) 13-Axle trailer at the Mid-America Truck Show in Louisville, Ky. March 26-28. The trailer has been specifically built for the customer to haul extremely diverse loads. Rated at 140,000 pounds capacity overall, the XL 140 HDE 13-Axle can handle large machinery or commercial freight of all sizes. With its low rear deck height of 28 inches, this trailer can haul freight normally seen on a Step Deck, but with the added efficiency of a hydraulic neck.
The 13-axle unit includes a three-axle trailer, three-axle jeep, and three-axle power booster. The XL classic-style hydraulic gooseneck is 13 feet, 8 inches long and includes a 52-inch fifth wheel height with seven ride height positions as well as a 9-foot 9-inch flip neck for the three-axle jeep.
The 57-foot 9-inch long trailer’s main deck is 29 feet long and opens to 50 feet 3 inches using XL’s patented Extend-a-Trac technology. With extension stops every two feet, the main deck is highly adjustable. This trailer also has a sub-frame disconnect which allows for deck inserts to be added for additional length, or for the main deck to be switched out for a different main deck if needed. The main deck is 102 inches wide and has a length of 29 feet with a ground clearance of 6 inches and a 26-inch loaded deck height. The width of the main deck can be extended to 10 feet six inches with 12-inch heavy-duty removable swingout outriggers. The main deck is also outfitted with thirteen bent D-rings and ten chain drops per side, as well as 31-inch front flip ramps. The deck also features 1 3/8th inch raised apitong decking—a wood stronger than oak.
The 15-foot 1-inch-long rear deck has a bolster-style wheel area with two bent D-rings on each bolster. Battery backup keeps the strobe lights on even when the neck is detached. Both the rear deck and the Power Booster’s axles go through the trailer frame to achieve a loaded deck height of 28 inches, only 2 inches higher than the main deck, allowing for easy loading over the rear.
The XL 3-Axle Power Booster provides additional flexibility and user control, as it scales an adjustable amount of weight from the rear of the trailer to the axles behind the Power Booster. The nitrogen gas accumulators not only help to scale the load over the axles more evenly but also act as a shock absorber and reduce the impact on the booster.
“The new XL 140 HDE 13-Axle trailer is rugged and incredibly versatile for use in both the commercial and construction markets,” said Rodney Crim, VP of Sales at XL Specialized Trailers. “We at XL Trailers value our customers, and this is another example of a trailer design meeting their specific needs. I am looking forward to sharing it at the Mid-America show.”
